The Lords of Kerry
The title Lord of Kerry is closely connected with the history, families and landscape of Ireland’s south-west.
Kerry’s story reaches back through centuries of Gaelic tradition, powerful dynasties and a culture that has retained its unmistakable character. The title evokes this heritage and the enduring fascination of Ireland’s Atlantic edge.
History of the Lord of Kerry
The title Lord of Kerry, also known historically as Baron of Kerry, has its origins in medieval Ireland.
It was associated with the Fitzmaurice family, one of the prominent Anglo-Norman families who settled in Ireland during the 12th century. Descended from Maurice FitzGerald, the Fitzmaurices established their influence across large parts of County Kerry and became one of the most powerful dynasties in the south-west.
The title was first granted in 1223 by King Henry III of England, with Thomas Fitzmaurice named as its first holder. Through connections with other influential families, including the FitzGeralds, the family strengthened its position in Munster over many generations.
Although of Anglo-Norman origin, the Fitzmaurices became closely connected with Irish culture. They spoke Irish, married into Irish families and maintained strong relations with local noble houses. The story of the Lords of Kerry therefore reflects the interwoven history of power, land, family and identity in Ireland.

County Kerry is one of Ireland’s most celebrated regions, known for rugged coastlines, rolling hills, mountain ranges and the blue waters of the Atlantic.

The Ring of Kerry
The Ring of Kerry is a famous scenic route of approximately 170 kilometres through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Ireland.
The journey traditionally begins in Killarney and can be travelled clockwise or counter-clockwise. Along the way are lakes, mountains, green valleys, Atlantic views and historic villages. Notable stops include Muckross House and Gardens, Killarney National Park, the colourful village of Sneem and the dramatic Kerry Cliffs.
Killarney National Park is ideal for walking and cycling and is also home to Torc Waterfall. Muckross House offers a glimpse into local history, while the villages along the route invite visitors to discover Irish crafts, regional food and traditional music.
Whether explored in a day or enjoyed more slowly, the Ring of Kerry brings together landscape, history and culture in a journey that captures the character of Ireland’s south-west.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
How three friends became the Lords of Kerry
It began after a long drive across Ireland. Three tired friends eventually arrived at a small pub on the Ring of Kerry — the sort of place where stopping for one drink can easily turn into an entire evening and, in our case, an unexpected change of social status.
We got talking to a local farmer, Mr Browne. As the evening progressed, we told him that we were looking for a genuinely unusual souvenir: not another postcard, not a woollen hat and certainly nothing that could be purchased in an airport gift shop.
Then somebody had an idea. Directly opposite the pub was a piece of Mr Browne’s land. What if we bought a tiny part of it?
Mr Browne was willing, we agreed on a price, and the transaction was completed with all the ceremony available in a small Irish pub. We drew up a deed of sale on a beer mat, paid the farmer and became the owners of our own little piece of County Kerry.
The landlord then pointed out an important linguistic consequence of our purchase. The Irish word tiarna can mean a lord, master or gentleman. A tiarna talún is, literally, a lord or owner of land — a landowner or landlord.
We owned land in Kerry.
Therefore, with flawless pub logic and a perfectly genuine beer-mat deed, we were now the Lords of Kerry.
It was an excellent souvenir. It was also a title that became useful much sooner than expected.
The title had earned its first memorable story. We found the whole idea so wonderfully amusing that we decided to make the experience available to others as well: the chance to become a tiarna — a Lord or Lady — through owning a piece of land in Kerry.
The land ownership is, honestly, more symbolic than agricultural; nobody should start shopping for a tractor. But the connection to Kerry, the personal story and the pleasure of being able to call yourself a tiarna talún are entirely the point.

Can I see where the property is?
Yes. The location can be viewed on Google Maps. As it is real land rather than a visitor attraction, any visit should be respectful and must not disturb the people using or caring for the property.

Bees could trespass
Under Brehon Law, bees grazing on a neighbour’s flowers created obligations. In the fourth year, the neighbour could be owed a swarm. Even the honey came with paperwork.
Ireland’s first copyright row
Columba secretly copied a psalter. The ruling — “to every cow its calf, to every book its copy” — helped trigger a dispute remembered with considerably more drama than a modern cease-and-desist letter.
Brian Boru won and still lost
Brian’s forces won at Clontarf, but the ageing king was killed in his tent by the fleeing Viking Brodir. Medieval victory celebrations could be brutally short.
Poets were feared professionals
A bard’s satire was believed capable of ruining a reputation — and possibly raising boils. Noble families paid poets handsomely, partly for praise and partly for the reassuring absence of creative criticism.
You could collect a debt by fasting at the door
The custom of troscud allowed a creditor to fast outside the debtor’s home. Ignoring the faster damaged honour and created legal pressure. It was passive aggression with full ceremonial status.
Dublin’s Vikings built cathedrals
The Norse settlers became Christian merchants, church builders and enthusiastic traders in mead, weapons and furs. Viking Dublin contained rather more bookkeeping than the helmets suggest.
An Irish king had to look the part
Early kings were expected to be physically unblemished. A serious injury could disqualify a ruler — an unusually strict performance review for a job already involving swords.
A national epic begins with a marital argument about a bull
The Táin Bó Cúailnge erupts after Queen Medb and King Ailill compare their possessions and discover a prize bull is tipping the balance. Ireland’s great heroic saga begins, magnificently, with competitive household accounting.
The Rock of Cashel was a gift with strategy attached
A king handed the famous stronghold to the Church. The gesture was pious, but it also made sure a rival clan would not inherit it. Charity and excellent estate planning can coexist.
Some marriages came with a one-year trial
At Teltown, couples could enter a trial marriage and separate after a year if things did not work out. Medieval Ireland understood the value of reading the terms before renewing.
